| Pat Baillie International Ms. Leather 1995 | Political Activism and Titleholders | Activism | Round Table Discussion | The leather community sought the brightest, best, hunkiest and the most outgoing to create an image of what we are as a community and to take leadership positions. This was vital in the 70's and 80's when many of the male leaders were lost to AIDS. In 2002 there is a sense that we don't need titleholders anymore. Look at the increasing number of contests at all levels and yet only one or two contestants compete for the title. The most experienced leaders in our community shy away from the titleholder spotlight. So many new titleholders are the up and coming leaders, not already established. Their time as is spent finding a broader perspective of the leather community and defining their personal issues and passions. Yet these titleholders are the ones who are called to represent the community and most frequently invited to be our spokespersons. Criticism comes quickly if they are not knowledgeable. How do we move these new titleholders into political activists? Some are already there and just need to connect to the political part of the leather community. Others need the chance to learn and grow. All perspective are welcome. | Pat first connected with the leather community back in 1979 while stationed in Phoenix Arizona. The now disbanded Phoenix Levi and Leather club were willing to open their hearts and show this budding pervert the ropes chains whips whatever. The key for them was service - fundraising and having a good time. She continued to work in the background of leather events while on active duty and was able to see not only traditional leather life but also what was new and growing around the country. Once the military prying eyes were gone Pat decided to become a more public leader in the leather community and use all those organizational skills she had been trained in for a higher purpose. She held the title of Ms Leather Master 1995 and Ms San Jose Leather 1995. Winning in Chicago at the first International Ms Leather (IMsL) contest produced by Amy Marie Meek/Bare Images gave Pat the opportunity to act as bridge between the first 9 and the next 5 IMsLs and gain a deeper understanding of the worldwide leather communities. She was Pantheon of Leather's Woman of the Year in 1997 and part of Couple of the Year in 1999. ' |

They co-sponsored two bondage workshops in 2001. The hotel canceled the group's reservation and Michigan Rope was forced to officially call off the workshop. This resulted in coverage in the local news and on TV and attention from police and was widely discussed on the internet. In this presentation the leader of Michigan Rope will talk candidly about what happened what was learned about the tactics of the far-right, what mistakes her group made, what resources they found for support, how they brought off the workshop successfully anyway what changes have been made in the group as a result and how future threats from extremists like the AFA can best be handled. | '"Rope Angel" is one of the founders and leaders of the Midwest bondage group Michigan Rope. | Andrew Park | Consent and Sex: Your Eyes Say Yes, But the Law Says No | Activism | Round Table Discussion | As activists one of the most difficult areas of sexual freedom policy has been the issue of consent in sexual situations. From the San Diego Six to Attleboro to Spanner leather sex and BDSM has been prosecuted as assault and battery by district attorneys who refuse to recognize the role of consent. The workshop is structured around the reading of depictions of various sex acts by volunteers from the audience. This workshop deeply examines the role of consent in sexual behavior. This workshop will try to sort out and make sense of the different rules about consent. This workshop asks the more important question: What position should leather activists take? Based on experience of having conducted this workshop before in other parts of the country we know that the conclusions of audience members along with areas of agreement and disagreement might surprise us. The workshop will indicate alliances in a sexual freedom movement will touch on radical and liberal feminist notions of consent and autonomy and will harken back to last century when the queer movement created institutional responses to defend its own sexual freedom. This lecture focuses on our values as the prime force that unites us protects us and guides our decisions as a community. There is more to us than kinky sex. What are the values that we need to have among us to teach our newbies and to survive? From our common values we can derive the principles that under-gird our lifestyle and upon which we can continue to be successful. A focus on values helps us to overcome the difficulties that we all have with rules and allows us to maintain a viable flexible and growing community. | Jonathan Krall | Practical Policies and Successful Models for Democratic SM Organizations | Organizational Management | Lecture | In a democratically run BDSM organization priorities must include Openness for the members Cooperation between the staff and the group leaders and Community support for the organization. Failure in any one of these areas can significantly damage the organization. Topics include safety and comfort policies for group members effective policies for elected directors and appointed staff leaders e-mail list policies for limited decision-making and effective communication and policies for building mutual support with other groups in the local community. Much of the material for this talk comes from the author s work with the Baltimore Educational and Social Society (BESS) which was organized using materials presented at past Leather Leadership Conferences. BESS is a unique group in that its elected leadership is distinct from its appointed and somewhat independent staff. Perhaps more importantly, BESS has a policy of codifying its policies and procedures into "team handbooks" to facilitate consistency and simplify the inevitable process of staff turnover. BESS has agreed to make these handbooks available for other organizations to use.' | 'Jonathan Krall is a founding member of BESS (www.bess-md.org) Black Rose (www.br.org) and DCSMA (www.dcsma.org). | Alan, Esq. | Large Event Planning: Hard Lessons Learned from TES30. | Organizational Management | Lecture | In August of 2001 The Eulenspiegel Society celebrated its 30th anniversary by hosting an event which boasted having 1 500-2 000 attendees at a large convention center in Central N.J. During the first evening the event was "visited" by numerous uniformed and non-uniformed members of the local and New Jersey State Law Enforcement. As a result of this visit State Police officers videotaped attendees in the midst of their scenes so as to gather evidence of violations of the Alcohol Beverage Commission administrative code. While the event was not shut down as a result of these violations the raid served to embarrass hundreds of people as well as harm the reputation of the event and the organization of TES itself. As a result of this event many people chose to leave the organization and the organization became embroiled in potential criminal and civil liability. This raid could have easily been avoidable. With sensible and logical planning it should have been avoided. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the mistakes that led to these events and how those mistakes could have been avoided. | Alan Esq. formerly TES Corporate Secretary is presently the Parliamentarian of TES which is a non-voting member of the Board of Directors and Presiding Officer. He has served on the TES Board for over 3 years and been a member for over 5 years. Alan is an attorney who recently passed both the New Jersey and New York Bar Examinations and is licensed to practice law in both jurisdictions . In recent years he has worked as counsel for TES in various legal matters including it s recent lawsuit in which a formal disgruntled member unsuccessfully attempted to obtain a copy of TES Membership List. Originally Alan served as the Legal advisor for TES30. He was dismissed from the position by the Executive Director of TES30 a decision ratified by the TES Board of Directors. On the day of the TES30 raid Alan was asked by the TES30 Executive Director to serve as a representative to the Local and State Authorities which he did. Now he helps coordinate the post-TES30 legal matters and serves informally as Counsel and liaison between the TES Board of Directors and TES outside counsel. ' |

| Bill S. | College Outreach - What Works/What Doesn t | Outreach | Panel Discussion | 'We change the world one mind at a time. Where can we make the biggest difference in educating the non-scene community? We believe that it is at the College level. Here there is a maturing group of young adults who for the most part are just learning all about sexually. We believe that this is where our community can have the greatest impact. This is our unique opporunity to get our mesage out. But it is critical how that message is delivered. The members of this panel have spoken at over two hundred and fifty different college classes in the last 20 years. Sometimes we have spoken together but most time we have spoken with a vast array of other community members. Most of the time the cemistry of the different panel members has been very good occassionally it has not been so good. We bear first hand witness to the good and the bad. We wish to share our experiences with you so that you also can learn.' | |

| maggie Allen | Cracking Open Breaking Up | Personal Skills | Round Table Discussion | What we often neglect at the beginning of a new relationship is a vision of its end. Many of us are familiar with negotiation in the leather community. It is a process of clarifying needs and expectations at the beginning of a relationship. Just like negotiating play negotiating break-ups (or changes in the original intention of the relationship) is a fluid strategy for managing the chaotic realm of human feelings. In a ninety-minute round table discussion we will lay out a model for negotiating these periods of change. How do we change an agreement? Who gets told, who tells? What will the transitional period look like? Will a ritual mark the change? This will include a discussion about identifying transformation as it emerges determining expectations and responsibilities breaking-up when you are in a position of leadership and managing change within organizations. Most importantly we will discuss how to work these understandings into a relationship at the beginning when communication is strong instead of trying to answer these questions in crisis.' | slutmaggie is a blonde-bi-mostly-bottom-sometimes-cross-dresser-top-radically-honest-slut. "Burnout" is *rampant* in the Progressive Queer organizing community. Whether one is a volunteer organizer/activist or a professional Queer doing the work of social justice/progressive change is often times a highly charged experience emotionally mentally intellectually and especially physically and spiritually. All too often this is manifested in organizers/activists by being stressed out wrung-out bitter and disillusioned--and sadly on just about every level of their lives. This workshop seeks to address these issues by providing the organizers/activists with the tools to transform their lives through the principles of "Sacred Pampering". (Sacred defined as "highly valued and worthy of respect"). Sacred Pampering stresses the importance of integrating joy into ones life through "self-care" first--doing the things that brings one joy in life--with the reasoning being that if one has balance in life the happier and more productive they are in the long run both professionally and personally. | Ladee | "Whats In It For Me ... or ... Exploring Your Bad Side " | Personal Skills | Other Experiential | I don t know about your mom but mine taught me that if I really want to GET something I had to give something. Unfortunately she left out a few key points. Like ... if you don t ask for what you want you probably WON'T get it. And in order to ask for what you want you have to know what it is you DO want. So you ve become a community leader and you re out there being a "good little girl or boy" giving and giving and giving ... and expecting something back. But SURPRISE! What you get s NOT what you expected. This experiential workshop will give you tips on GETTING what you want out of the experience by being "bad" once in a while. Much of this workshop will be based on Cameron Tuttle s "Be a Bad Girl .. A Journal." Be prepared to WORK in this session ... this is a "hands-on" workshop.' | Ladee is a motivating force in helping people recognize their inner strength, and personal acheivement goals. | Annie's girl sheryl | Leading as a submissive: On Being Heard from Our Knees | Personal Skills | Lecture | According to the American Heritage® Dictionary a leader is one that leads or guides; who is in charge or in command of others; whereas a submissive is one who is inclined or willing to submit; to yield or surrender (oneself) to the will or authority of another. These terms appear to be conflictual. Respected authors have written about the strength of submission. Submissives are no longer viewed as weak willed; but skillful graceful givers of their will. We are taking on and being appointed to higher levels of leadership. This lecture will focus on the submissive as a leader: how we lead what we do and how we manage the conflict of being a submissive leader. Situations arise that are uncomfortable for many. Imagine the conflict for one who is innately submissive. These issues will be addressed in this presentation as well as time for opinions comments questions from the workshop participants. ' | Annie's girl sheryl holds a Ph.D in psychology and belongs to Ms. Annie Romano-Blas Ms. World Leather 2001. she found her leather sisters 11 years ago in a book hidden on a back shelf. It caught her attention merely for the boldness of the title "Macho Sluts". she moved from the world of the written word to that of cyber as the online community unfolded in the early 90's. It was her first experience of the leather community becoming divided and distracted. The debate between the online and real/time communities regarding what was "real" created rifts that lasted years. In 1996 she moved to San Diego and mustered the courage to immerse herself in the real/time community. It was through all these experiences she found herself being called into a leadership role. | Will Hildreth | Interpersonal Skills for Leather Leadership | Personal Skills | Lecture | Whether elected selected or chosen as group leaders “by default” we often arrive in our roles with less than defined ideas of how to lead effectively. Cultivating a mission for the group requires listening letting go of our preconceived expectations and stepping outside the “ego box” to find effective tools to really hear our constituents and therefore serve our community. Organizations are colored by the tone of their leadership. Helping an organization grow and flourish requires a defined purpose honoring volunteers / members and therefore inspiring them to contribute to the group’s goals. Leadership in the leather community can be a difficult matter because the dialectic of control / being controlled which many of us eroticize is often not the most effective way to lead groups. The talk / discussion will attempt to identify common pitfalls and strategize ways around them in order to lead more effectively. | MRNJLeather2002 rob carabelli | Changing Negative Stereotypes: A Proactive Aprroach | Public Relations | Round Table Discussion | Changing Negative Stereotypes: A Proactive Approach. I will begin with the history and give examples of theses stereotypes. Next I will discuss the psychosocial harm these stereotypes perpetuate--particularly in youth. Finally i will discuss several proactive measures which we can do right now to overturn these stereotypes. First is a media response team. Local leather clubs and organizations could have a task force who responds to the media immediately whenever a stereotype is perpetuated. Educating media with facts about gay-bashing and discrination can add credence. Second is the establishment of a national "Sexual Freedom Month". This could bring awareness to the problem and provide outreach to those experiencing the impact of negative stereotypes. This utilizes the idea of a state-by-state proclaimation of any health related issue. I will discuss my experience in developing another national health month and give recommendations on how this can be done including a budget.Thirdly i will discuss education through lecturing on the college campuses and gay community centers. | 'Rob Carabelli is MRNJLeather2002 and a member of Defenders-Philadelphia and Promethean Guard-NJ.
