Basics
The Washington Plaza Hotel is in the downtown area at 10 Thomas Circle in Northwest Washington.
Northwest is the part of the District both north and west of the US Capitol
Thomas Circle in Northwest is at the intersection of 14th Street, M Street, Massachusetts Avenue, and Vermont Avenue. The Hotel is on the northeast side of the Circle with an entrance road off Vermont Avenue.
Basic Street Layout: In Northwest Washington, Numbered Streets run north-south and increase in number as you go west. Lettered Streets run east-west and increase in the alphabet as you go north. Avenues (named after States) run at angles to both numbered streets and lettered streets.
Washington trivia; there is no J Street. One explanation is that Congress was mad at John Jay for agreeing to a poor treaty in 1794 with Great Britain (allegedly because he was paying too much attention to the wife of the British negotiator). A more prosaic version is that I and J were too similar in colonial era handwriting.
Capital Beltway (I-495) is the circular road that surrounds the District. I-95 uses the eastern side of the Beltway to bypass the District.

From the Capital Beltway take the Baltimore Washington Parkway South (marked as State 295 on the Overview Map).
If you are coming South on I-95, follow the signs for I-95 South when you reach the Capitol Beltway and then take Exit 22 for the Southbound Baltimore Washington Parkway.
From Baltimore Washington Airport (BWI) follow the signs to the Southbound Baltimore Washington Parkway.
Continue on the Baltimore Washington Parkway until it runs into New York Avenue and continue West on New York Avenue. After crossing 6th Street Northwest, New York Avenue comes to Mt Vernon Square. (Mt. Vernon Square is the intersection of New York and Massachusetts Avenues.) Stay on the North side of Mt Vernon Square and turn on to Massachusetts Avenue going in a northwestward direction. After you cross 13th Street Northwest stay to right and continue on the surface (do not take the tunnel under Thomas Circle). As you enter the Circle proceed past M Street and turn right on Vermont Avenue. The Hotel will be to your right.
From the Capital Beltway take US 50 (the John Hanson Highway) West until it runs into New York Avenue and continue West on New York Avenue. After crossing 6th Street Northwest, New York Avenue comes to Mt Vernon Square. (Mt. Vernon Square is the intersection of New York and Massachusetts Avenues.) Stay on the North side of Mt Vernon Square and turn on to Massachusetts Avenue going in a northwestward direction. After you cross 13th Street Northwest stay to right and continue on the surface (do not take the tunnel under Thomas Circle). As you enter the Circle proceed past M Street and turn right on Vermont Avenue. The Hotel will be to your right.
As I-95 approaches the Capital Beltway stay to the left and continue North on I395 (the Henry Shirley Memorial Highway). Continue North on I395 until you cross the Potomac River.
From National Airport (DCA) follow the signs for the Northbound George Washington Parkway. Take the 14th Street Bridge (I395 North) Exit
Follow the signs for the 14th Street Exit. Continue North on 14th Street. After you cross L Street stay to the right as you enter Thomas Circle taking the outer roadway (14th Street continues through Thomas Circle on an inner roadway that you do not want). Enter the outer circle and continue past Massachusetts Avenue and M Street and turn right on Vermont Avenue. The Hotel will be to your right.
From the Capital Beltway take I66 East.
From Dulles Airport (IAD) stay on the Dulles Airport Access Road to Washington. (The center roadway for airport users is free, the outer roadway for others is a toll road.) The Access Road will merge into I66 East.
After it crosses the Potomac River, follow the signs for Constitution Avenue. Continue East on Constitution. Just after you go by the White House and Ellipse (on your left) turn Left on 15th Street. Continue North on 15th Street. As you cross K Street continue straight ahead which will put you on Vermont Avenue. Enter Thomas Circle and continue past 14th Street, Massachusetts Avenue and M Street and turn right on the continuation of Vermont Avenue. As you pass 14th Street stay in the outer circular roadway (14th Street continues through Thomas Circle on an inner roadway that you do not want). The Hotel will be to your right.
Go South on I270. At the split of I270 stay to the right, following the signs "To Virginia." The tail of I270 will merge into the West (outer) lanes of the Capital Beltway (I-495). As you cross the Potomac River take the first Exit to the right for the Southbound George Washington Parkway. Continue South on the Parkway. After the exit for the Key Bridge, take the exit for the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge. As you cross the Roosevelt Bridge follow the signs for Constitution Avenue. Continue East on Constitution. Just after you go by the White House and Ellipse (on your left) turn Left on 15th Street. Continue North on 15th Street. As you cross K Street continue straight ahead which will put you on Vermont Avenue. Enter Thomas Circle and continue past 14th Street, Massachusetts Avenue and M Street and turn right on the continuation of Vermont Avenue. As you pass 14th Street stay in the outer circular roadway (14th Street continues through Thomas Circle on an inner roadway that you do not want). The Hotel will be to your right.
